Abstract:

In this paper we introduce a modified version of fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering technique in order to build clusters of companies as to their financial performances. The most important telecommunication companies are analyzed. The dataset consists of 88 companies, the time span being 1995-2001. Our implementation overcomes FCM and previously reported SOM clustering techniques in terms of pattern allocation. Moreover, the use of linguistic variables to model the financial ratios gives our technique a better explanatory power over the other two.
