Transition of the Transition Economies - Using SOM to Map Socio-economic Development

Mikael Collan, Tomas Eklund, Transition of the Transition Economies - Using SOM to Map Socio-economic Development. In: Proceedings of the First International Manas University Conference in Economics, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, 127-135, 2004.

Abstract:

Socio-economic situation of a country can be measured in a number of
ways, often by looking at indicator values describing different aspects
of the social and economic reality in the country in question. Socio-
economic development can be measured, and observed, by comparing yearly
indicator values in a number of ways.

This paper utilises self-organising maps (SOM) to observe, compare, and
visualise development in transition economies. Using longitudinal (five
year), multidimensional (multi indicator) socio-economic country data,
the paper presents how transition economies can be positioned, and their
development tracked, with SOM. The paper shortly discusses the
advantages achieved by using SOM over simply comparing yearly indicator
values, or bundled indicator ratios, in observing and visualising socio-
economic development.

The paper shows, with examples, that SOM is a helpful tool in
intuitively visualising and measuring multi dimensional socio-economic
data, and socio-economic development.
