Facilitating the Understanding of Business Processes with Simulation Game

Sami Nurmi, Timo Lainema, Facilitating the Understanding of Business Processes with Simulation Game. In: World Conference on Educational Multimedia, Hypermedia and Telecommunications (EDMEDIA), 2003, 2163-2170, 2003.

Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to present some problems which business education is facing and to introduce one possible solution. The solution we are proposing is the use of a dynamic, complex business simulation game. We will also describe two in-house training sessions in one Finnish company, in which our game was applied. The research concerning these training sessions reveal that working with the simulation game facilitated the development of holistic understanding of business processes, it was regarded as a rewarding experience, and collaboration and engagement were strong. In other words, using dynamic learning tools like this one can provide an authentic, motivating and engaging environment for learning. We also conclude that real-time processing and interactivity of the simulation game are important elements if we want to be able to represent realistically cross-functional business processes.
