Measuring Forward Error Correction Code Performances by Receiver Coding Gain
Kristian Nybom, Sébastien Lafond, Jerker Björkqvist, Measuring Forward Error Correction Code Performances by Receiver Coding Gain. In: 6th COST 2100 MCM, 2008.
Abstract:
Forward Error Correction (FEC) codes are extensively being used in
digital communication networks to recover from transmission errors.
Typically, the coding gain is measured to get an indication on the gain
in signal-to-noise ratio required for achieving a certain bit error rate.
Hence, the coding gain is from a transmitter point of view. In this
paper, the receiver coding gain is considered, i.e. the coding gain from
the receiver point of view, which determines the gain in energy
consumption in a receiver for using a FEC code. The receiver coding gain
is analyzed in a DVB-H IP Datacasting (IPDC) scenario, where there
typically is a requirement on a zero error ratio. The energy consumption
used for error correction is compared to the energy used when receiving
more carousel rounds, in order to meet the zero error ratio requirements.
