A Survey on Application Layer Forward Error Correction Codes for IP Datacasting in DVB-H
Kristian Nybom, Dejan Vukobratovic, A Survey on Application Layer Forward Error Correction Codes for IP Datacasting in DVB-H. In: 3rd COST 2100 MCM, 2007.
Abstract:
DVB-H is an IP-based wireless broadcast technology in which users are offered the possibility of downloading broadcasted files to their mobile terminals. For reliable file delivery, the DVB-H standard specifies the Digital Fountain (DF) Raptor codes as an Application Layer Forward Error Correction (AL-FEC) solution, unrivalled in its overall performance for IP datacasting (IPDC) services. However, due to their license fees, alternative AL-FEC codes providing license-free delivery of files, with a slight loss in the performance compared to the Raptor codes, have come into the focus of recent research. This report gives a survey of several possibilities for alternative AL-FEC codes with performance comparisons to the standardized Raptor codes. The benefits and drawbacks of the alternative codes are discussed.
