Abstract:

We evaluate the effect of using a mobile electronic first-aid guide in training for army conscripts. The study groups consist of conscripts from two Finnish garrisons from the I/2007 cohort. One group received a mobile first-aid guide for their mobile phones and the other (control) group did not.
The groups were tested twice in first-aid knowledge, once before their standard military first-aid training to establish a base level and the second time four months after the training. The group equipped with the mobile guide showed a significantly better level of knowledge than the control group in the second test.
The army's mobile first-aid guide was found to be a useful tool in emergency situations and for studying first-aid knowledge during the conscripts’ leisure time. It brings a new mobile dimension to training and education in first-aid situations in a military environment.
