Information Technology -Related Stress

Reetta Raitoharju, Information Technology -Related Stress. In: The 28th Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia (IRIS28), Kristiansand, Norway, August 6.-9., 2005.

Abstract:

This paper reviews the literature on stress and the role of increasing use of information technology as a source of stress, with particular reference to work environment. The literature reveals that besides being a stressor by increasing job demands, information technology can also change organisation structures to be less supporting to employees. Moreover, IT puts hard pressures on individual resources by demanding constant refresing of skills. The people most vulnerable are those suffering from technophobia or computer. A theme in the literature is that, although a lot of research has been made in different areas revealing the stressful aspects of IT,
the actual discussion about the role of IT as a source of stress is limited.
