Women's Use of Technology – A Gendered View

Riikka Vuokko, Pia Berg, Women's Use of Technology – A Gendered View. In: Proceedings of the 29th Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia (IRIS 29), August 12-15, 2006, Elsinore, Denmark, 2006.

Abstract:

This article argues the dualistic thinking that explains men as more capable users of technology than women. Masculinity is usually attached to technical prowess while femininity is described through altruistic care. Actions of women are more easily defined or valued by their gender although both masculine and feminine are defined in relation to each other by being socially constructed in long historical processes. We propose a view where technological capabilities are not based on gender but instead individually interpreted in context of use. We explore women’s use of technology with an ethnographical case study where social home care workers enhance their work practices with new information technology. Technology could be seen as an enabling opportunity for all, both women and men.
