Work Ethics and Effectiveness in Home Care: Rationalization through Technological Innovation

Abstract:

In social home care, effectiveness and quality of services were the perceived outcomes of implementation of mobile informatics. Mobile technology was introduced to make the planning of work easier. In reality, the views on managerial accountability and local accountabilities amongst the care workers have been somewhat contrasting, and it seems that the new information system cannot fulfil all the information needs of the workers. Resistance towards the new system was caused by undefined or misunderstood concepts during the implementation. Problems in defining mobile informatics as a part of the care work caused the view that technology cannot be aligned with professional ethics held by the care workers. On the other hand, growing visibility of work has showed a need for open discussion about the daily working practices and organizational culture.
