Abstract:

Knowledge creation and learning are key issues in the renovation of a company. Knowledge creation and learning are seen as a long-term investment, receiving more and more emphasis as companies evaluate their values. Creation of added value is based on the improvement of personnel's performance through practical work and theoretical abilities. This research examines organizational knowledge creation and learning through the Co-Evolute methodology created at the Tampere University of Technology in Pori. The Co-Evolute methodology utilizes ontology engineering to support the use of several specific fuzzy applications on the Internet. Fuzzy applications have been developed on the basis of the Co-Evolute theory framework, which consists of different scientific fields and theories. In this research two applications are presented: Folium, studying organizational knowledge creation and Talbot, studying learning the environment.
Databases of Folium and Talbot applications include statements, which are used in the evaluation of the organization's environment for knowledge creation and learning. By using Folium and Talbot applications it is possible to follow systematically how different issues develop in the organization and to identify areas of significant development needs. The Co-Evolute methodology measures the difference between current and desired states, i.e. the proactive vision of the organization or individual.
This paper presents the results of a Co-Evolute survey, carried out at the Institute for Advanced Management Systems Research (IAMSR) at Åbo Akademi University in Turku, Finland during the spring of 2005. Using the case study, this paper shows how the Folium and Talbot Co-Evolute applications can be used to identify areas requiring development in the knowledge creation and learning processes in an organization.
