An Analysis of the Terminology in the Context of Productization

Arho Suominen, An Analysis of the Terminology in the Context of Productization. 2009.

Abstract:

This thesis analyzes the term productization term and the curriculum taught
at the University of Turku, Finland, The work clarifies the terminological
background of the term productization as well as explains the evolution of
teaching the productization curriculum.

The work summarizes the theoretical background on terms seen as relating
to productization. This is done to the extent that the reader is able to follow
the process of forming the ontology of productization. The thesis analyses
terms such as New Product Development (NPD), innovation, Management of
Technology (MOT), Fuzzy Front End (FFE) in order to find the context in
which productization could be defined.

The thesis has as its research question the definition of productization. As seen in the theoretical background, the term productization is unclearly defined and lacks structure and context. By building ontology the term is seen
as getting much needed clarification.

In the context of this thesis ontology is described as a term used to refer to
shared understanding of a specific domain. By building a concrete model of
this shared understanding the concept map and definition of productization is
presented.

The work concludes in the implication that the thesis is seen as having to the
definition of productization as well as to the education of productization.
The definition of productization is seen as forming, but seen as needing open
debate. The education of productization is seen as forming towards a MOT
type curriculum structure which raises the question of forming a Master of
Science program in MOT.
