Increasing Business-Relevancy to the IT Service Product with the Support of Packaging of IT Services
Petteri Kaitovaara, Increasing Business-Relevancy to the IT Service Product with the Support of Packaging of IT Services. TUCS Technical Reports 391, Turku Centre for Computer Science, 2001.
Abstract:
This paper discusses a business-relevant process model and its principles for design activity in information system (IS) development. It is based upon the findings of an interpretive and empirical case studies of IS design process and the information technology (IT) service products in Oy L M Ericsson Ab (a subsidiary of the Ericsson Group) and Sonera Juxto Ltd (a subsidiary of Sonera plc). The paper suggests some implications for theory and practice. From a theoretical perspective, it is suggested that the presented theories of packaging of IT services can be broadened to certain areas, such as considerations of evolution roadmaps and IS architectural issues, and thereby their affect on IS development. From a practical perspective, the adoption of a process of design facilitates the structural development of offered IT service. The findings also have implications for the organizational learning. The principles of the packaging of IT services offer means for the personnel to design and develop the IT service by linking business-relevancy to IS development process. Thus, IT related tasks and services are transformed into more marketable IT service products with faster time, which add value for the selected customers. Furthermore, there are some differences for packaged IT services for the internal and external markets, which are identified and discussed in this paper.
