Segmentation and Intensity Correction of Breast Region in Digitized Mammograms
Tiina Ojala, Janne Näppi, Olli Nevalainen, Segmentation and Intensity Correction of Breast Region in Digitized Mammograms. TUCS Technical Reports 220, Turku Centre for Computer Science, 1998.
Abstract:
Preprocessing of a digital mammogram is necessary before applying automatic pattern recognition methods to detect abnormalities in the breast tissue. The preprocessing may increase the accuracy of the recognition and on the other hand decrease the running time of the implementation by leaving out unnecessary regions of the image. We present algorithms for segmenting the breast region from the background, and for correcting the decreased intensity near the breast skin line. Several image processing methods are applied including histogram thresholding, morphological filtering, Gaussian and Sobel filtering, the Fourier transform and adaptive contour models.
