Abstract:

Multi-head gantry machines are used increasingly in PCB manufacturing environments. However, their use includes many options having an influence on the overall manufacturing speed of the machine type. In this paper we consider the problem of selecting the nozzles for these machines. Vacuum nozzles are used in pick and insert operations to place components on bare PCBs. We consider the simple case where an unlimited number of nozzles can be hired, and then the case where there is a given budget for the total cost of nozzles. We also discuss the case of selecting nozzles when manufacturing multiple different PCB types. We show that the problem of selecting nozzles without cost limitations is solvable in polynomial time
and give an algorithm for the problem. We also propose a greedy heuristic for the cost limited nozzle selection problem.
