A New Vision on Personal Information Managing and Sharing Using Instant Messaging

Laurens Waling, Anna Sell, A New Vision on Personal Information Managing and Sharing Using Instant Messaging. 3, 2004.

Abstract:

Instant Messaging (IM), already for years very popular among teenagers, is these days settling between other ways of communications with the potential to improve the efficiency of our daily activities. In this paper the IM technology is used to support the sharing of personal information.

Personal information management is nowadays nothing more than trying to keep an overview of a large amount of files, tasks, appointments, contact information, notes and e-mails by putting them in separate folders. This paper proposes integration between these different information resources by adding flexible, user-defined and user-controlled relationships. Those relationships link data into spider webs, a concept we use to describe the bundles of information created in this way.

The next step is to share those spider webs of data with the persons you want by using IM techniques. Those techniques provide solutions for authorization, identification, presence awareness and direct contact. Contacts can easily be grouped and a group’s access to a spider web of information can be customized.

The main points of this new vision are:
• Maintain the current way of using PIM tools.
• Create better views by adding colored categories to all data
• Add extra value by creating relationships to your personal
information
• Access your data from everywhere, device independent
• Use IM for identification
• Authorize contacts or group of contacts on your IM buddy list.
• Share and collaborate on your personal information.

This paper ends with a scenario about how future personal information management and sharing personal information may look like. This scenario has been discussed with students who have been working with WLAN-enabled PDA’s, and have had the chance to try wireless instant messaging. Their feedback is also added to this paper.
