Learning outcomes:
After completing this course a student has both detailed theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on laboratory experience in different Firewall and IPS technologies. The student is capable of specifying, designing, administering and analyzing network security solutions based on both commercial and open source firewall and IPS software, and has a general understanding of network security.
Content:
Firewalls and their role in network security. Theoretical background and practical implementation. Virtual Private Networks (VPN) and firewalls. Intrusion prevention and detection fundamentals. Theoretical background of traffic identification and classification. Network topologies and security design issues. Practical exercises on real Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPSs) and firewalls in a controlled environment. Guest lectures from industry partners on firewall and IPS related topics.
