Health Informatics (2018 Spring)

Organisation: UTU / Dept. of Future Technologies

Credit Points: 5

Responsible Person: Elise Syrjälä

Course code: DTEK1075

Learning outcomes:
Health informatics is an evolving field that focuses on design, development, adoption and application of technology in health care delivery. The course focuses on the field, providing students advanced information on associated technologies, and technology development. As such, the course is intended for students who seek specialization and career in the field. In addition to technology, the course will discuss how ecosystems related to the technology development in the field are organized, and how innovation platforms operate in practice. The course is in the cross-section of technology, business and innovation studies. Upon completion, the students will understand how the discussed technologies operate, and what kind of setting technology development in the field requires.

Content:
The lectures are organized according to two primary themes, ecosystems and technologies. The first theme sets the stage for technology development in the domains of health care, social services and wellbeing; what are the requirements and practical limitations. The second theme covers a selection of technologies that discussed in detail and in practice. These themes are intertwined and inseparable; the students are not able to pick only one, or complete the themes at different times. In order to gain a more thorough understanding on the discussed topics, additional exercises are included in the course (see below for more information).
