Graduate project title:
IT Outsourcing Governance: A Perspective of Practice-Based Networks
Graduate project abstract:
The governance of IT outsourcing (ITO) has been identified as an essential determinant for ITO success. While prior studies have shed light on how to determine effective governance models to inform practice, little research attention has been reversely initiated from practice when certain governance model is implemented. In this doctoral study, I propose a perspective of practice-based networks to scrutinize ITO governance practice, incorporating social network perspective and practice theory. The study centres around two research questions: (1) How is ITO governance practice reflected by social networks? (2) How will ITO governance practice affect the formal governance model? Four research papers are planned to answer these questions with both theoretical review and empirical evidences. Besides one paper of literature review, the rest empirical papers are three inter-related case studies combining qualitative enquiries and Social Network Analysis (SNA) to investigate the ITO governance practice respectively through intra- and inter-organizational networks. With this doctoral study, I hope to contribute to the understandings of ITO governance both with theoretical implication and methodological innovation; meanwhile, I also strive to enhance practitioners’ rationalities on their ITO governance models.
