How to apply in the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Computer Sciences

  1. Application documents
    The right to pursue a doctoral degree and /or funded doctoral training position is/are applied for with a free-form application. In the application you need to specify whether you only apply for the right to pursue doctoral degree, a funded position or both. In addition, when applying for the right to pursue a doctoral degree the application form for postgraduate studies of the faculty in question needs to be completed in cooperation with the supervisor. Forms can be found on the following websites: The application should include:
    • Appendix 1: short curriculum vitae
    • Appendix 2: copy of the degree certificate and a transcript of records including grades
    • Appendix 3: transcript of records from other studies, e.g. postgraduate courses
    • Appendix 4: list of publications with references
    • Appendix 5: preliminary research plan, where applicant’s motivation and research interests are presented, and possible planned arrangements of supervision
    • Appendix 6: other possible documents, e.g. information of grants and prizes and letters of recommendation
  2. Submitting applications
    Applications should be addressed to the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Computer Sciences and they should be submitted as pdf files to mathdept@utu.fi.The file should be named Matti_Surname_Forename_Year.pdf.

    Call closes on September 30th, 2013 at 15:45(GMT +2). Applications received after the deadline will not be processed.
  3. Assessment of applications
    • The applications will be assessed by the board of the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Computer Sciences with experts from outside the University of Turku if need be.
    • Assessment and selection criteria consist of applicant’s educational and academic merits as well as research potential assessed on the basis of the application documents. The research topic of the Doctoral Candidate must fit the profile of the programme.
  4. Decisions
    The decisions on granting the right to pursue a degree as well as the decisions on employing the candidate on a UTUGS-funded doctoral training position are made by the Dean of the faculty in question based on the proposal of the board of the doctoral programme. The applicant will be informed personally about the decision on granting the right to pursue a degree. The names of the persons who have been selected for the funded positions will be published on the website www.utu.fi/matti by the end of November 2013.
