TUCS Distinguished Lecture Series

Following its great success last fall, as demonstrated by the large audiences it drew, the TUCS Distinguished Lecture Series continues this Spring with several other exciting speakers. We already have confirmations from Kaj Arnö (MySQL), Jan van Leeuwen (University of Utrecht), Christos Papadimitriou (University of California at Berkeley), Grzegorz Rozenberg (University of Leiden).

 Call for travel funds

 TUCS travel grants will be awarded 4 times during 2013, with the following deadlines:

 

  1. Round 1: Deadline Friday 1st February, Applicants informed of decisions by Fri 8th of February
  2. Round 2: Deadline Friday 26th April, Applicants informed of decision by Fri 3rd of May
  3. Round 3: Deadline Friday 16th August, Applicants informed of decisions by Fri 23rd of August
  4. Round 4: Deadline Friday 1st November, Applicants informed of decisions by Fri 8th November

 

Hereby Round 1 is open for applications. Applications should be submitted to (tucs@abo.fi) according to the guidelines at http://tucs.fi/education/information-students/travelling-instructions-phd-students/ before the deadline Friday 1st February.

 

Any applications arriving after the deadline will automatically be moved to Round 2 for consideration.

 

Also note that any applications submitted in 2012 that are pending decisions will be automatically considered to be submitted to round 1, and will be decided by Fri 8th of February.

 

 

Call for TUCS short course applications

 

Support for TUCS short courses will be awarded 2 times during 2013, with the following deadlines:

  1. Round 1: Deadline Friday 1st February, Applicants informed of decisions by Fri 8th of February
  2. Round 2: Deadline Friday 16th August, Applicants informed of decisions by Fri 23rd of August

 

The first round of applications for TUCS short course funding is now open. The deadline for the applications is Friday 1st of February 2013.

 

Applications should contain the following information:

  1. course description/ contents
  2. components
  3. times, lecture halls and the amount of credits
  4. name of the contact person for the course
  5. name of the lecturer (if not the same as the contact person)
  6. budget for the course (accommodation, fees etc)

 

The applications should be submitted to TUCS by email (tucs@abo.fi) by the deadline. Priority will be given to courses that are not part of the normal curriculum.

 

The applicant's home department is responsible for the practical arrangements, including travel plans and invoices, as well as travel, and salary costs. If the application is approved, the real costs or the granted amount, depending on which is less, should be invoiced from TUCS by the department.

TUCS study report round 1.2.-28.2.2013

The annual TUCS Study Report round will take place 1.2-28.2.2013. TUCS doctoral students have the obligation to report the progress of their studies once a year. This duty concerns all students with TUCS status (part-time as well as full-time students, students getting a salary/grant from TUCS, a department or a project, as well as students who do not get any financing from TUCS or the departments).

The study report will be done electronically at: https://www.tucs.fi/studyreport/ . The system will open 1 February 2013. Please note that the system closes late on 28th of February after which it is not possible to fill in the report anymore. The reporting period is 1.1.2012-31.12.2012.

 

ICCES 2013: Call for Ph.D. students

 

TUCS is participating in the ERASMUS Intensive Programme (ICCES - Innovation and Creativity for Complex Engineering Systems) along with seven European universities. The overall objective of this ERASMUS IP is to upgrade the industry relevance of European Ph.D. education in engineering and technology, in order to produce Ph.D. graduates who are better equipped to participate in all aspects of innovation and product development in industry. The main objective is to train Ph.D. students on how to tackle problems of high complexity in an innovative and research-oriented perspective within industrial contexts.

 

During the ICCES Programme Ph.D. students will be confronted with real (and complex) engineering problems owned by the industrial partner acting as the local host of the delivery of the ICCES Programme. The students, organised in multi-disciplinary teams, are expected to propose a research plan that adequately tackles a given problem, with both a scientific perspective and a business/market one. The plan must include issues like intellectual property rights, patents, industrial innovation, funding for innovation projects, market needs, research collaborations, publication of industrial case studies and demonstration cases.

 

In 2013, the 2nd edition of the ICCES Programme will be hosted in Portugal by Bosch Car Multimedia Portugal (http://www.bosch.pt), located in the north of Portugal, more specifically in the city of Braga. Bosch Car Multimedia Portugal S.A. (BrgP) is a production plant of complex electronic systems. With this competency, Bosch Car Multimedia Braga, owned by Robert Bosch Portugal SGPS, S.A. and a full member of the Bosch Group, based in Stuttgart, Germany, is the leading plant of this business division.

 

TUCS GP students now have the possibility to apply to attend the programme. The programme will

take place in Braga, Portugal on 18.6.-5.7.2013. TUCS has been allocated a maximum of three slots in the programme.

 

We are looking for students in computer science, informatics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, production engineering, electronics, manufacturing, industrial engineering, robotics, and similar areas. The programme will pay the air tickets and transportation (up to 300 EUR; except Vigo students EUR 225) and hotel. Lunches and dinners will be provided by Bosch in their facilities, in the days when students have activities in their facilities. More information on the programme: http://icces.di.uminho.pt/

TUCS GP doctoral defence

 

On Monday, January 28th, TUCS GP student Anton Tarasyuk presented his Doctoral thesis "Formal Development and Quantitative Verification of Dependable Systems" for public criticism. The opponent of M.Sc. Tarasyuk was Professor Aad van Moorsel from Newscastle University, United Kingdoms. Adjunct Professor Elena Troubitsyna acted as the custos at this public defence.

New course: A Practical Approach to Zero-Defect Programming

A Practical Approach to Zero-Defect Programming

Advanced course in CS (5 cu)

Course description:

In this course we address the challenge of building correct programs. We will use the technique of Invariant Based Programming for constructing correct programs. Invariants specify what is true about the variables of the program at different points in the execution flow. In the course we will use the Socos tool for building invariant-based programs. Socos supports a diagrammatic notation for programs, and it generates a number of verification conditions that ensures the correctness of the program.

The course, upon completion, awards 5 ECTS credits.

Target audience:

  1. This is an advanced course in Computer Science. M.Sc. students in Computer Science and Computer engineering, at both Åbo Akademi and University of Turku, are all eligible to take the course.
  2. Additionally the course is suitable for Ph.D. students from both universities working in these same areas.

Prerequisites:

  1. Introductory knowledge of programming in an imperative programming language (e.g. Java, Python, ...)
  2. Basics of mathematical logic or introductory formal methods are strongly encouraged. General knowledge of Mathematics and mathematical proofs are also useful.

Working methods:

  1. There will be 8 two-hour lectures, and 8 two-hour exercises sessions. There will be 8 assignments of increasing difficulty to be solved outside of classroom and submitted for grading before a deadline. Students are expected to install the software needed.
  2. The course will have also a final project. To pass the course the at least 60% from the assignments and the project should be completed.

  1. Lectures: Tuesdays 15 – 17, in Fortran, starting 19.03.2013
  2. Exercises sessions: Mondays 13 – 15, in Algol, starting 25.03.2013

New course: Formal grammars

Formal grammars are mathematical models of the syntax of languages, both natural (such as English and Finnish), and artificial (such as HTML or C++). These models are motivated by the need for formal reasoning about languages, and particularly by language processing in computer software. The course shall present formal grammars from the point of view of theoretical computer science, concentrating on the models that are both mathematically beautiful and relevant to applications. Special attention shall be given to parsing algorithms and their complexity.

There are no prerequisites to the course. A tentative list of topics to be presented is given at the course web page at        http://users.utu.fi/aleokh/formal_grammars/

As compared to typical courses in formal language theory, this course leaves out many outdated topics from the late 1950s, such as the Chomsky hierarchy or context-sensitive grammars, and uses the time to present the most significant models and ideas developed in the later years, including conjunctive grammars, tree-adjoining grammars, stochastic grammars, input-driven automata, etc. The course develops a modern

outlook on formal grammars as a logic.

The first lecture shall take place on Wednesday, the 9th of January, A.D. 2013, at 16-18, in lecture room Publicum 299. In this lecture, I will give the basic definitions of formal language theory and present an overview of the entire course. All interested are welcome.

Euroweb second application call open

 

EUROWEB, European Research and Educational Collaboration with Western Balkans, is a scholarship programme for students on undergraduate, master, doctoral and post-doctoral level as well as for university staff in academic or administrative positions, financed by the European Commission. The Erasmus Mundus EUROWEB scholarship offers a unique opportunity for full-financed academic mobility for individuals from the EU and Western Balkans partner countries. The project is part of the large-scale, EU-funded programme Erasmus Mundus Action 2.

 

The EUROWEB Scholarship Programme is open to selected nationals in EU countries and Western Balkans who want to study or work at one of the partner institutions (see Applicant information). The overall objective of EUROWEB project is to create a partnership in research and education that will strengthen the ties between EU and Western Balkans.

 

The Consortium includes 17 Higher Education Institutions: 9 in Europe and 8 in Western Balkans. Scholarships are available for mobility from the Western Balkan countries to EU partners and vice versa.

TUCS GP travel report: HICSS by Marko Niemimaa

Full name of the event: Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS)

Place and date: Wailea, Hawaii, USA, January 7th – 10th 2013

Type of event: conference

My article:

  1. Title of paper: Interpreting Information Security Policy Outcomes: A Frames of Reference Perspective
  2. Authors: Niemimaa, M., Laaksonen, E., Harnesk, D.

The scientific profile of the event: The papers presented at the conference covered a large variety of topics ranging from social networking to security and disaster recovery. Thus, what is understood as ‘system sciences’ is very broad.

Opinion on the best paper and its topic: Although I am not myself concerned with research on moral/ethics, the best presentation during the conference was related to corporate moral agency. The presenter gave impression he was very well aware of the different perspectives how the topic had been approached and constructed a structuring framework on the topic. He also had quite an eloquent style of presenting making it more enjoyable to watch.

Number of participants: Approx. 900

Social events: Every evening the conference organizers had arranged an event on the resorts courtyard for participants to network, where they offered also free drinks for the first hour. Last evening a bigger event was held that included a show with traditional dances from different paradise islands nearby Hawaii. Also, some local delicacy, pork prepared cooking pit (a Hawaii version of the Finnish ‘rosvopaisti’), was offered as the main course.

Touristic impressions: The conference was held in a luxury resort in the beautiful island of Maui. The conference venue was well organized and surroundings excellent for a conference and for relaxation after a hard and exhausting day at conference rooms. Everything was, however, very expensive (for example 35USD for a breakfast!) and in order to go anywhere on the island you need to have your own car. The necessity for own car also means that there is quite a lot of traffic throughout the day.

 TUCS GP travel report: ICDM 2012 by Peter Sarlin

 

Full name of the event: International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM 2012)

Place and date: Brussels, Belgium, 10-13 December 2012

My article:

  1. Title of paper: A Weighted SOM for classifying data with instance-varying importance
  2. Author: Peter Sarlin

 

The scientific profile of the event: ICDM is the world's premier research conference on data mining. The workshops that take place prior to ICDM have a more applied focus but are still of high quality. Likewise, the Industry and Government Track that also precedes the conference provides a broad overview of recent trends outside academia.

 

Opinion on the best paper and its topic: In my opinion, the most interesting talk was one in the Industry and Government Track entitled Mining (Massive) Consumer Behavior Data for Marketing given by Foster Provost. He discussed recent developments in mining customer data, in particular how to benefit from having vast amounts of data.

 

Number of participants: approx. 700

 

Social events: Visits to the Magritte Museum, the Cantillon Brewery (Brussels Gueuze Museum) and the Museum of Cocoa and Chocolate. We also had a traditional welcome reception and conference dinner, as well as beer tasting.

 

Touristic impressions: Brussels, the capital of Europe, is a nice and lively city and the conference venue was a hotel in the very city centre.

 

TUCS GP travel report: JM 2012 by Mari Huova

 

Full name of the event: The 14th Journées Montoises of Theoretical Computer Science

Place and date: Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, September 11th–14th 2012

Type of event: Conference

 

My article:

  1. Title of paper: On Unavoidability of k-abelian Squares in Pure Morphic Words
  2. Author: Mari Huova

The scientific profile of the event: The topics of the conference were combinatorics and algorithmics on words, automata theory and formal languages theory, discrete dynamical systems and symbolic dynamics, and their links with other fields (number theory, calculability, logical aspects, model checking, theory of semigroups, game theory, discrete geometry, decentralized algorithms, biocomputing, etc.).

 

Opinion on the best paper and its topic: I can’t mention the best paper but I liked the paper by G. Badkobeh, M. Crochemore and M. Rao with the title “Finite-repetition threshold for large alphabets”. The reason why I found that paper the most interesting is that it is closely related to my own research topic.

 

Number of participants: The number of registered participants was 67 and the number of speakers was 39.

 

Social events: Visit of the Hergé Museum and a banquet

 

Touristic impressions: Louvain-la-Neuve is a quite new and university centered city. Actually, it was built to house the Université Catholique de Louvain and hence the student population is large. The center of the city is mostly car free and that makes it easy to walk around. It is also worth to mention the Hergé Museum which introduces not only Tintin but all the other characters created by Hergé, too. Louvain-la-Neuve is situated 30 km southeast of Brussels so it is also easy to visit attractions of the capital of Belgium.

The scientific profile of the event:

  1. The main tracks were cloud architecture, MapReduce, security and privacy in cloud, cloud services and applications, virtualization, high-performance computing on cloud, and industrial applications.
  2. In addition, there were following workshops: Emerging Issues in Cloud (EIC), International Workshop on Network Infrastructure Services as part of Cloud Computing (NetCloud), International Workshop on GPU Computing in Clouds (GPU-Cloud), International Workshop on Cloud Computing for Internet of Things (IoT), International Workshop on Software-as-a-Service Architecture and Engineering (SaaS workshop), International Workshop on Data Analytics and Mining in the Cloud (DaMiC), and International Workshop on Cloud Computing for Research Collaborations (CRC).

 

Opinion on the best paper and its topic: Hybrid Cloud Resource Provisioning Policy in the Presence of Resource Failures by Bahman Javadi (best paper runner-up)

 

Number of participants: Approximately 150

 

Social events: conference welcome reception on 3.12.2012, banquet on 4.12.2012, and city tour on 6.12.2012

 

Touristic impressions: Touristic impressions about the conference venue and its surroundings: Social events were well-organized, warm welcoming, and entertaining with plenty of delicious, lavish food to easily over-eat. Weather was mostly sunny and pleasant, except two days which had light rains and showers. Taipei has many wonderful places to visit including Taipei 101, which is one of the tallest skyscrapers of the world, national palace museum, memorial hall, Shilin night market, and martyrs’ shrine.

 

TUCS GP travel report: Syntaksin kurssi 2012 by Katri Haverinen

 

Full name of the event: Syntaksin kurssi (Finnish for "a course on syntax")

Place and date: Helsinki, Finland, November 7th–9th 2012

Type of event: A course for graduate students, arranged by Langnet.

 

The scientific profile of the event: The event was a course on syntax, targeted at the graduate student level. The lecturers were leading experts on syntax in Finland, and the topics covered were syntactic categories, word order, constituency and dependency, and argument structures.

 

Opinion on the best paper and its topic: The most interesting portion of the course for me discussed argument structures of verbs in different languages and how those are marked in morphology and syntax. This was especially interesting, because it is directly related to my own current work.

 

Number of participants: Approx. 30

 

Social events: On the first evening of the event, there was an informal dinner for those course participants who wished to attend. The dinner took place in restaurant Amarillo, in the very center of Helsinki.

 

TUCS GP travel report: T&SA 2012 by Rajeev Kumar Kanth

The scientific profile of the event: The Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) focuses on the environmental, economic, developmental, and health and safety implications of technology. The society is concerned with engineering ethics and professional responsibility and engineering education in the social implications of technology, in the history of electro-technology and other technology-related areas. It provides technical expertise to inform public policy related to energy, peace technology, information technology and telecommunications.

 

Opinion on the best paper and its topic: In my opinion, the best presentation of the event was a keynote speech given by Mr. NR Narayana Murthy on “Reflecting on IT and the Global Community”.

Social events: Conference Dinner

 

Touristic impressions: Republic of Singapore is a south-east Asian city-state off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, 137 kilometers north of the equator. This is my first trip to Singapore. This trip left many beautiful and positive things in my mind about Singapore. Though physically small, Singapore is an economic giant. It has been Southeast Asia's most modern city for over a century. The city blends Malay, Chinese, Arab, Indian and English cultures and religions. Its unique ethnic tapestry affords visitors a wide array of sightseeing and culinary opportunities from which to choose. Singapore's climate is warm and humid, with only slight variations between the average maximum of 31 degrees Celsius and minimum of 23 degrees Celsius. This makes it ideal for those who enjoy sunbathing, swimming, sailing and other water sports. There are plenty of tourist attractions and shopping complexes. At last, I would say I love this country.
