Abstract: Covertly computational insights have influenced the Theory of Evolution from the very start. I shall discuss recent work on some central problems in Evolution that was inspired and informed by computational ideas. Considerations about the performance of genetic algorithms led to a novel theory of the role of sex in Evolution based on the concept of mixability, while the population genetic equations describing the evolution of a species can be reinterpreted, under the neutral theory, as a repeated game between genes played through the multiplicative updates algorithm.
The TUCS Distinguished Lecture Series is a forum for public lectures by outstanding national and international researchers in all aspects of computing, coming both from academia and industry. All lectures are free and open to the public.

Abstract: "Trying to go beyond classical logic, Archimedes axiom, Fifth Postulate in Euclid’s Elements, the Galileo-Newtonian representation of phenomena related to time and energy, the macroscopic universe, the choice axiom, von Neumann’s axiom of foundation, continuum hypothesis, Turing’s computability, the field of competence of human language and human semiosis, the representation of artistic beauty as based on order, simplicity, harmony and symmetry means to transgress the borders of the common perception of the world according to our senses. We try to obtain the picture of these enterprises and to point out their meaning and their relevance, as components of a new, anti intuitive world emerging in the last decades. In a second step, we try to bridge this view with another one, coming from the way transcendence is emerging in mathematics, logic, music, philosophy."

Third call for TUCS travel grants
The third call for the TUSC travel grants during 2013 is underway. The deadline for applications is Friday 16th August and the applicants will be informed of decisions by Fri 23rd of August.
Applications should be submitted to (tucs@abo.fi) according to the guidelines at http://tucs.fi/education/information-students/travelling-instructions-phd-students/ before the deadline 16.8.2013, 16.00 pm.
Any applications arriving after the deadline will automatically be moved to the fourth and round for consideration. The deadline for the fourth call is Friday 1st November.
Second call for TUCS short course applications
The second and final round of applications for TUCS short course funding 2013 is open. The deadline for the applications is Friday 16th of August 2013.
Applications should contain the following information:
- course description/ contents
- components
- times, lecture halls and the amount of credits
- name of the contact person for the course
- name of the lecturer (if not the same as the contact person)
- budget for the course (accommodation, fees etc)
The applications should be submitted to TUCS by email (tucs@abo.fi) by the deadline 23.8.2013, 16.00 pm. Priority will be given to courses that are not part of the normal curriculum.
The applicant's home department is responsible for the practical arrangements, including travel plans and invoices, as well as travel, and salary costs. If the application is approved, the real costs or the granted amount, depending on which is less, should be invoiced from TUCS by the department.
Guest lecture: Routing Algorithms for Partially Regular and Hierarchical Networks on Chip

Routing Algorithms for Partially Regular and Hierarchical Networks on Chip
Abstract
Network on Chip (NoC) is getting accepted by semiconductor industry as a preferred interconnection choice for implementing multi-core and multi-processor systems on chip. The regular mesh topology Network on Chip (NoC) architecture continues to be the most popular with researchers and manufacturers since it leads to deterministic electrical properties for the links. However, a weakness of the regular mesh topology is its inability to efficiently support cores of different sizes. In a typical multi-core SoC, there is a wide variation in the sizes of cores. One solution to this problem is to allot multiple slots (or rectangular regions) to oversized cores. This solution leads to more efficient use of chip area but introduces irregularity in the network. This irregularity implies that the standard routing algorithms for regular mesh topology are no more useful. We will present two solutions to design of deadlock free and efficient routing algorithms for such partially regular networks. Our attempt to solve this particular situation lead us to propose a methodology of designing efficient and deadlock free routing algorithm which is topology independent. We call this as APplication Specific Routing Algorithm (APSRA) design methodology.
In consistent with the development of electronics in the past, the systems of today will become components tomorrow. In the same sense, the components for future SoCs will be multi-core systems with their local networks connecting the cores. Therefore, a future system will be organized as a hierarchical NoC, consisting of possibly heterogeneous sub-networks as components. Designing deadlock free and efficient routing algorithms for such networks brings new challenges. We will describe HiRA, which is a methodology for design of deadlock free routing algorithms for hierarchical NoCs.
Shashi Kumar received the B.Tec., M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India in 1974, 1976, and 1985 respectively. Since 1999, he is a Professor of Embedded Systems, School of Engineering, Jönköping University, Sweden. His research interests include parallel computer architectures, system-level modeling and synthesis, design automation, reconfigurable computing, and heuristic search algorithms. He was member of the team which was the first to propose the idea of packet switched communication for on-chip communication and coined the term Networks-on-Chip (NoC) in 2000. His research group has significant contributions in various aspects of NoC based design including NoC topologies, Routing algorithms in NoC, QoS in NoC routing, Application Specific NoC architecture design, Application mapping to NoC platforms and Testing of NoC links. Professor Shashi Kumar has been in the program committees of major international conferences related to VLSI design, design automation and Network on Chip, including VLSI Design, DATE, NoC Symposium, Euro-Micro DSD etc. He served as a Guest co-editor for the VLSI Design Journal - Special Issue on Networks-on-Chip in 2008, as Guest co-editor for Elsevier MICPRO Journal - Special Issue on Network-on-Chip Architectures and Design Methodologies in 2010. He is a senior member of IEEE and member of ACM SIGDA. He was also the Co-organizer of International Workshops on Network-on-Chip Architectures (NoCArc) in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Guest lecture: Printed Smart Electronic System for the Internet-of-Things
A guest lecture will be given by Prof. Zheng Li-Rong from Fudan University, Shanghai, P.R China. Prof. Zheng will be promoted as a Doctor Honoris Causa by University of Turku next week.
The talk will take place on Thursady May 30th at 11-12 in auditorium Lambda, ICT House.
Printed Smart Electronic System for the Internet-of-Things
Abstract:
Advanced electronics towards the future ubiquitous intelligence and internet-of-things requires high network throughput along with long operation range and ultra-low energy consumption, and ultra-low hardware cost. The vision of disappearance of electronics demands seamless integration technologies for electronics that could embed tiny smart devices and sensors in any type of goods including everyday objectives and human body. In this talk, I will present state-of-the-art research in large area printed electronics and system, from a circuit and system perspective. The work covers from printed devices such as humidity and chemical sensors based on CNT (carbon nano-tubes) and polymers, printed RFID tags and antenna, to hybrid integrated tags and systems for emerging applications in fresh food tracking and intelligent Bio-patches. Special focus will be from a circuit and system perspective on how optimal total solution could be achieved by combing state-of-the-art printed electronics with relatively mature silicon technologies.
Short Bio:
Dr. Li-Rong Zheng holds professor chair in media electronics at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm Sweden since 2006. He become a distinguished professor and dean of ICT school of Fudan University since 2010. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in electronic system design from KTH in 2001. After then, he joined KTH as a research fellow, heading research activities in area of heterogeneous electronics systems and mixed-signal system design. In 2006, he becomes full professor at KTH, heading researches in area of electronics for ambient intelligence and media applications. He initiated researches of intelligent paper and package, where he connects forest industry, electronics industry, and biomedical industry work together, jointly develop technologies and applications such as biomedical paper and intelligent package for healthcare and food safety applications. He has founded and being the director of iPack VINN Excellence at KTH since 2007. Dr. Zheng made over 400 publications in area of electronic circuit and system design and integration technologies, among which a high number of publications made jointly with Turku University.
TUCS GP doctoral defence
On Friday, June 7th, TUCS GP student Peter Sarlin presents his Doctoral thesis "Mapping Financial Stability" for public criticism. The opponent of M.Sc.(Econ) Sarlin is Professor Barbara Hammer from CITEC centre of excellence, Germany. Docent Tomas Eklund will act as the custos at this public defence.

BIO
Lionel Morel received his MSc and PhD in Computer Science from Grenoble University, in France in 2001 and 2005 respectively. His initial research topics focused on programming models for critical embedded systems. After experiences at Abo Akademi in 2005-06 and INRIA-Rennes in 2006-07, he joined the Computer Science and Information Technologies Department and CITI lab of INSA de Lyon in 2007 (www.citi-lab.fr/en_UK). There, he teaches processor architecture, operating systems concepts, concurrent programming and real-time operating systems. His research interests extend to Models of Computations for embedded systems, in particular dataflow programming, as well as programming models and operating systems support for energy-efficient embedded systems. Within the SOCRATE team he applies his research to software-defined radio and low-energy portable devices.
SYNOPSIS
Multi-core processor architectures are becoming a defacto standard for the vast majority of computing devices and the trend is towards many cores with several hundreds of cpus on a single chip already available from mainstream manufacturers. In this context, we are particularly interested in the question of how to program these machines in order to harness their computing power. Dataflow programming has recently gained a lot of attention from both academic and industrial researchers. It provides a programming paradigm that is appealing for large classes of applications (multi-media, telecommunications, etc) and allows for automatic parallelization of these applications on parallel machines.
This seminar will try to present state of the art and recent advances in the field of dataflow programming. We will first focus on programming models including historical ones like Khan Networks and SDF. We will also present state-of-the-art languages or language extensions that implement these model of computations (streamIt, RVC-Cal, OpenStream, etc). We will then present some more recent approaches, in particular those that propose some form of dynamism in the constitution of the applications. This dynamism is of crucial importance if we want dataflow to address recent needs that appear in certain application domains. We will illustrate some of these domans, in particular that of software-defined radio, and try to show some open problems in designing dataflow languages and runtimes systems for these programs.

EUROWEB third application call now open
EUROWEB, European Research and Educational Collaboration with Western Balkans, is a scholarship programme for students on undergraduate, master, doctoral and post-doctoral level as well as for university staff in academic or administrative positions, financed by the European Commission. The Erasmus Mundus EUROWEB scholarship offers a unique opportunity for full-financed academic mobility for individuals from the EU and Western Balkans partner countries. The project is part of the large-scale, EU-funded programme Erasmus Mundus Action 2.
The EUROWEB Scholarship Programme is open to selected nationals in EU countries and Western Balkans who want to study or work at one of the partner institutions (see Applicant information). The overall objective of EUROWEB project is to create a partnership in research and education that will strengthen the ties between EU and Western Balkans.

Smart Energy Summer School
Smart Energy Summer School will take place 19-30 August in Berlin (Siemens Technical Academy, first week) and Paris (Paris Sud University, second week).
The primary goal of the Smart Energy Summer School is to foster excellence in SmartGrids, from control systems to computer science and telecommunication, including economic aspects. The summer school aims at bringing a very broad training to students from several fields related to smart energy systems. Classes will range from basics of power systems to ICT for large energy systems, communication and security, economical aspects of energy, reliability of power systems, automation, state observers and estimation of systems' parameters, electric vehicles and their impact on the power system among others.
Participating students will learn the current state of the art in SmartGrids and will be able to apply new techniques coming from various communities and backgrounds to their own domain.
Courses will be given in English by experts from industry and academia working in various fields on the common topic of Smart Energy Systems.
Requirements:
Poster sessions are planned during extended coffee breaks. In order to receive their financial support, PhD students and company staff are required to bring a poster for presentation, and 1-2 slides for presentation.

The 9th International conference on Words will be hosted by the Department of Mathematcs of the University of Turku (Finland) on September 16-20, 2013 under the auspices of the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science. It is organized by the FUNDIM Centre in connection with FiDiPro program of the Academy of Finland.
The central topic of the conference is combinatorics on words (i.e. the study of finite and infinite sequence of symbols) from varying points of view, including their combinatorial, algebraic and algorithmic aspects, as well as their applications.

The International Conference on Electronic Commerce (ICEC) annually brings together the leaders of the scientific research community in e-commerce and e-business from all over the world. Having travelled across the globe from Hawaii to Liverpool and Singapore, the conference returns to Europe, first time to Fenno-Scandia, a medieval Capital of Finland and Hansa-city of Turku, Finland.
The theme of ICEC 2013 is Effective, Agile and Trusted eServices Co-creation. The theme reflects alignment between computerized, formalized business procedures with the need for innovating business genuinely onthe-spot, or ad-hoc, to the needs of a customer.

Applying formal methods may involve the modeling of different aspects of a system that are expressed through different paradigms. Correspondingly, different analysis techniques will be used to examine differently modeled system views, different kinds of properties, or simply in order to cope with the sheer complexity of the system. The iFM conference series seeks to further research into hybrid approaches to formal modeling and analysis; i.e., the combination of (formal and semi-formal) methods for system development, regarding modeling and analysis, and covering all aspects from language design through verification and analysis techniques to tools and their integration into software engineering practice.

"The Human Machine"
Aboagora is an event that promotes dialogue between the arts, humanities and sciences, and aims at challenging and breaking boundaries between arts and the scholarly world. The programme consists of workshops, keynote lectures and concerts. Aboagora is a joint effort by the Turku Music Festival, the Department of Cultural History at the University of Turku and the Donner Institute, Åbo Akademi University.
Aboagora 2013 discusses the complex relationships between man and machine. The human being itself can be viewed as a corporeal machine, an assemblage of forces, actions and mechanisms, from the optics of the eye to the processes of cognition. It is also possible to interpret the machine as an extension of human senses. The boundaries between man and machine can be blurred by using technological devices as integral parts of the human body.
The theme 'The Human Machine' can also pay attention on all those practices that create humanness in a machine: How we assume machines to feel and think? What kind of personal qualities do they have? Machines have also served as the vehicles of human creativity, as tools but also as the expressions of abstract thoughts. Aboagora wishes to address this fascinating area that has been a fertile ground for artistic and scientific explorations during recent decades.
Keynote speakers include Bruce Sterling (Science Fiction Author, USA), Kevin Warwick (Professor of Cybernetics, UK), Mia Consalvo (Research Chair of Game Studies and Design, Canada), Timo Airaksinen (Philosopher, Finland).
Among the workshop members are Tuomas Lukka (Zenrobotics Corporation), Timo Kaitaro (Philosophy & Neuropsychology), Kathleen Richardson (Social Anthropology), Mika Pantzar (Consumer Research Centre), Alf Rehn (Chair of Management and Organization), Jussi Parikka (Media Theory), John Armitage (Media Arts), Samuli Torssonen (Film director), Veijo Hietala (Media Studies), Mia Lövheim (Sociology of Religion), Susanna Paasonen (Media Studies), Johanna Sumiala (Media Studies), André Jansson (Media & Communication Studies), and Alice Della Penna (Biology).
The registration fee for the symposium is 45 € (for students and post-graduate students 25 €). It includes participation for all keynote lectures, admission to all workshops, three lunches and coffee/tea, and conference reception.

The scientific profile of the event: The NODALIDA conferences cover topics in speech recognition and synthesis, natural language processing and computational linguistics. Also papers on topics from neighboring fields (linguistics and psychology are mentioned in the call for papers) are sometimes presented.
Opinion on the best paper and its topic: Perhaps the most interesting presentation for me personally was Nordic and Baltic Wordnets Aligned and Compared through “WordTies” by Bolette Pedersen and co-authors. This talk discussed aligning the Nordic lexical resources named WordNets to make a multi-lingual resource. The similarities and differences between the different WordNets and what kind of issues their different design principles cause in the alignment were also very interesting topics for me.
Number of participants: approximately 140
Social events: The conference dinner took place in the Oslo Opera House on the first evening of the conference. On the second evening there was a reception at the City Hall, the same place where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded.
Touristic impressions: The conference was held in the premises of the University of Oslo, a little way from the center of the city. Oslo is a beautiful city, and it's also easily manageable, as the very center is mostly focused on one street, and otherwise the public transport system, consisting of buses, trams and a metro network, seems quite sufficient. The Opera House is definitely worth seeing, and other sights include the Dome and a park of statues, both also in the center of the city.

The scientific profile of the event: The goal of the seminar was to present the methodologies of designing a user study in informatics as well as to practice to design such a study for a current problem.
Opinion on the best paper and its topic: In my opinion, the speaker Prof. Gondy Leroy from Claremont Graduate University delivered interesting talks on ‘Designing User Studies in Informatics’. Her discussion motivates methodological issues and highlights emerging themes in design studies.

The scientific profile of the event: SSCI is one of two flagship conferences sponsored by the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. It focuses on the theory and applications of computational intelligence (CI) and attracts a large number of top researchers in a wide range of fields related to CI.
Opinion on the best paper and its topic: The paper that attracted my attention was "Visualisation of High-Dimensional Data Using an Ensemble of Neural Networks" by Nikolaos Gianniotis and Carsten Riggelsen. As the title suggests, they used ensemble learning for projecting high-dimensional data to a lower dimension. This is an innovative approach to dimensionality reduction that has the merit of robust projections (at the cost of computational efficiency).
Number of participants: approx. 700
Social events: We had a traditional welcome reception and conference dinner.
Touristic impressions: We explored the city, including for instance China town, Little India and Marina bay, and visited the zoo for a night safari.

The scientific profile of the event: The focus was “Science, Technology and Innovation in the Emerging Markets Economy” which describes, in my mind, quite well the scopes of the conference series.
Opinion on the best paper and its topic: The keynote address by Professor Joseph Tidd, University of Sussex, was the most interesting one for me. In the presentation, he summarized the current research focuses and argued that we should rethink and widen the scope of the field.
Number of participants: There were over 270 presentations and several participants without a paper; thus, I would guess that the number of participants were over 350.
Social events: In addition to technical visits (several alternatives, I went to the winery of Luiz Argenta), the IAMOT yearly award dinner was held in a local Gaúcho restaurant.
Touristic impressions: Porto Alegre really is not a tourist city and there were only a few sights. However, the country and the city are really beautiful – even during the local autumn.
